Possibilities and Best Practices for Emerging Analytics in Higher Education

From the Field with Blackboard and SXSWedu

Analytics have come to the forefront of the conversation concerning the directions of Higher Education in the last few years.  Dozens of products and services have charged into the fray, promising to import, warehouse, analyze, and magically produce actionable reports.

The consensus at the Blackboard Analytics Symposium, held in early February, 2017, was that the promise remains to be filled.

This research note captures best practices as identified and asserted thus far by educational customers.  It expands upon recent WR blogging with additional examination of Symposium end user comments and comments expressed by users of analytics products addressing the challenges, such as Northeastern University, at South by Southwest EDU (SXSWedu) in March, 2017. WR also draws on recent conversations we have held with institutions well on their way to adopting analytics tools to transform their organizations.

The note covers the Big Data Product Landscape, the Data Challenge, and Analysis and Best Practices. It profiles or otherwise discusses Southern New Hampshire University, Drexel University, Northeastern University, Indian River State College, and Concordia University Wisconsin.  Eight recommended best practices range from change management, user training, data governance policies, and dashboards to staffing and skill sets.
