The volume of articles covering how different the Millennial generation is from the older, Generation-X and Baby Boomer cohorts seems to have waned some in the past year. While I suspect reader fatigue is one likely cause of the decline, I wonder if in fact we’re not all that different.  And I have some data that backs me up.

Last October, Wainhouse Research conducted a survey of 1,801 workers who were at least 21 years old. The group was asked questions about its usage and attitudes toward various types of business video, both live streaming and on-demand.

Larger than ever with almost 8,000 attendees from 47 countries this year, Austin, TX’s South by Southwest Edu (SXSWedu) “felt” different this year.  The vibe?  Let’s roll up our sleeves and be a bit more realistic about Ed Tech.  Though in recent years venture capital and its interest in Ed Tech has been a dominant element of SXSWedu, and complaints from educators were frequent that the conference had been taken over by the moneyed, this year saw a moderate, more methodical tone.  At least that’s what I felt.

Yesterday Amazon announced Amazon Chime, and with it Amazon enters squarely into the collaboration services market.  Chime provides audio, video, and web conferencing along with persistent chat messaging.  The offering, which is hosted on Amazon Web Services, joins Amazon’s growing portfolio of “Business Productivity” Apps that includes WorkMail, WorkDocs, WorkSpaces, and AppStream.  Chime will be sold both direct and through partners – the first of which are Level3 and Vonage.

Two announcements over the past few weeks deeply reveal the inner workings of two very different Persistent Collaboration Spaces (PCS) vendors and their offerings.  I had the opportunity to attend both launches, which were “conveniently” scheduled a week apart in San Francisco.  Across the country from me.  But I digress.  So my first observation: each announcement pushed squarely along the “comfort vector” of each company – working within the parameters of what each does best.

As a streaming industry stalwart closely associated with its namesake encoding appliances, VBrick historically had been known primarily as a purveyor of video hardware.

Finally and definitively, I think we can safely say that image should be dead and buried. Today’s VBrick is a software company, through and through.

At least that’s the conclusion drawn after speaking with VBrick CEO Shelly Heiden about the company’s 2016 results this past week.
